Last time on the tour, we left off at Olneyville NY System for wieners... and as though we didn't sample enough RI food yet, we trudged on.
Stop #4 DePetrillo's Pizza and Bakery in Warwick, RI
If you're not from RI, the term "pizza strips" mean nothing to you. They weren't a part of my vocabulary until I met my husband. A shame, I know.
To lay it out for you - RI pizza is dough with sauce. Sometimes peppers and onions are added, but not cheese.

This was such a hard concept for me to grasp. No cheese? I love cheese. I need cheese.
But try these bad boys out; they are delicious! And the perfect party food. You don't need to heat them, and I've usually been served pizza strips at room temp. People can nosh as they please!
(And for the record, we didn't eat the RI pizza strips yesterday. We got them to go!)
Jonathan and Garett
This was a must-stop on the tour, in my eyes. I knew we had to end our tour on a sweet note, and doughboys really are the way to go. We were all pretty stuffed at this point, but we took one for the team and each had one.
A doughboy is a mix between a hot donut and fried dough. It is more dense than fried dough and a donut, but covered in cinnamon & sugar like fried dough. And they are the size of donuts, relatively.
Mr. Shiksa and I had these over the summer at Iggy's Narragansett, RI location (first time for me) and fell in loooooove.
We didn't fall in love at that moment, sillies. I fell in love with doughboys.
They are made fresh to order, served hot in a paper bag, and you shake the cinnamon & sugar in the bag before reaching in to taste one. I know it may be hard to wait to shake, but you gotta. It just isn't the same without that crunchy sweetness.
Now is when we all became a little guilty...a little. I am sure Baby L loved it, Stacey!
TIP: visit their website for a buy 6 get 6 free doughboys coupon.
TIP #2: when on a food tour with 6 people, one dozen is enough (instead of each couple ordering a dozen...they were bigger than I remembered, sorry!).
Coffee Milk is another staple in RI. It is coffee flavored syrup. Like chocolate syrup to make chocolate milk, but coffee. It paired perfectly with the doughboys. I am not 100% sure, but I think you really can't buy it outside of RI. It's a staple, I tell you.
Stop #6 La Sorpresa Bakery in Central Falls, RI
So I know I started out this tour saying we made 5 stops along the way...well this was the last stop for an empanada pick up only.
La Sorpresa Bakery is a Latino eatery that Olga and Garett have been going to and buying their empanadas at for a while. We often see them at their annual Chrismahanukkah Party. Jon just couldn't go home until we swung by.
I am sorry that I do not have a photo :( I couldn't bare the sight of any more food, even if it was in a bag, right then and there. Just trust me; next time you are in Central Falls, be safe and lock up your cars, run into La Sorpresa, and you won't be sorry you did. Then drive away real fast and eat your delicious empanadas in the comfort of your own home.
Don't know about Central Falls? Google it.
The ride home from RI was quiet. We were all ready for a nap I think.
Thank you to our friends for a fun food adventure. S & O - great idea! We need to get started on our spring Worcester tour. . . who's in?
xoxo
